As we enter the final stages of the summer transfer window, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news. Today, did Arsene Wenger hint at a last ditch move for Nuri Sahin?
Did Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hint he was lining up a late attempt to hijack Liverpool’s move for Nuri Sahin at his weekly press conference today?
The Nuri Sahin transfer-saga has had more twists and turns than a mid-sized tornado. First he was off to Liverpool, then Arsenal, then Spurs entered the race, then he was definitely going to Arsenal before news broke on Thursday night that he was heading to Anfield.
According to the BBC, the Merseyside club had bettered Arsenal’s loan offer, with Arsene Wenger understood to be pushing for a permanent deal or at least the option to buy at the end of the year-long loan spell.
Madrid and Sahin are believed to only want a simple loan deal, something Liverpool were willing to offer and the Reds were also willing to pay more in terms of wages and loan fee, so off to Anfield he went. Brendan Rodgers confirmed today that the paperwork was almost complete and the player would now undergo a medical over the weekend.
As we sat down to listen to Arsene Wengers press conference on Friday, we expected to hear him confirm his disappointment at missing out on the Turkish international and give us some insight on where it went wrong for the Gunners.
But when Wenger was quizzed about whether a move to the Emirates was dead or if it could be resurrected, the Frenchman told Sky Sports News:
“At the moment, it is not alive. Can you be not alive and not dead? It is possible.”
For those who are used to Wenger, this is a very ‘suspicious’ response. If he had given up all hope of signing the player, he would have said so. If anything, the Frenchman usually down-plays all links with players and denies all knowledge of his interest.
So is he hinting he may be about to make a last minute move to hijack Liverpool’s move? It’s been reported that the players preference was Arsenal due to the lure of champions league football, so if the Gunners did match Liverpool’s offer they may find themselves back in the driving seat.
However, Sahin is clearly extremely close to sealing his move to Anfield, so if Wenger is planning on making a late move, he better hurry up about it. In all likelihood, this is probably Wenger just teasing the press, as we know he likes to do from time to time, and Sahin will more than likely to be unveiled as a Liverpool player tomorrow.
