Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed what it’s like to be on the end of boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous ‘hairdryer’ treatment, describing it as ‘horrible’.
Ferguson has become known for his explosive outbursts at his players with former striker Mark Hughes nicknaming it as getting the ‘hairdryer treatment’.
In the latest extract from his autobiography, that’s being serialised in the Mirror, Rooney has revealed the 70-year-old Scot has not lost his touch when it comes to giving his players a dressing down.
Rooney describes the moment as ‘horrible’ but it hasn’t stopped him answering his manager back at times:
“There’s nothing worse than getting the ‘hairdryer’ from Sir Alex,”
“When it happens, the manager stands in the middle of the room and loses it at me. He gets right up in my face and shouts.
“It feels like I’ve put my head in front of a BaByliss Turbo Power 2200. It’s horrible.
“I don’t like getting shouted at by anyone. It’s hard for me to take, so sometimes I shout back.
“I tell him he’s wrong and I’m right.”
Rooney is quoted as saying in the Mirror.
The United striker also revealed that Fergusons outbursts can have either a positive or negative effect on players performances, with some unable to recover mentally having faced the managers wrath.
Rooney also recalled the worst ‘hairdryer treatment’ he’s seen was aimed at Louis Saha in 2006 after the Frenchman missed a late penalty to salvage a draw against Celtic, who were managed by Ferguson’s old foe Gordan Strachan at the time.
“It spurs some of the lads on, but it crushes others,”
“I’ve seen the manager shout and scream at people and when they’ve gone back on the pitch their heads have dropped. They’ve lost it.”
“It’s the worst ‘hairdryer’ I’ve seen,”
“He’s in Louis’ face, shouting and screaming. But Louis isn’t the only one getting an earful.
“The manager knows I’ve been negotiating a new deal with the club and he saves some for me, ‘Players wanting more money from the club and new deals – you don’t deserve anything after that performance!’”
Rooney is quoted as saying in the Mirror.
The 26-year-old went on to reveal that even when United had secured the Premier League title at Old Trafford in 2007, despite going 1-0 down to West Ham, Ferguson blasted his players in the dressing room just minutes before they were due to receive the trophy.
“Most sides would be celebrating in the dressing-room, getting ready for the champagne and the photos,” recalled Rooney.
“Not us. We’re staring at the floor like school kids, the manager giving us the ‘hairdryer’.
“After the rollicking it takes a while before everyone cheers up enough to put their Premier League-winning smiles back on.”
Rooney is quoted as saying in the Mirror.
