United Linked With Swoop For Argentinean Duo After Scouting Trip

With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today, Man Utd are linked with a double swoop.
Manchester United are lining up a double swoop on Benfica for Argentinean duo Ezequiel Garay and Nicolas Gaitan after sending scouts to watch the pair on Sunday night, according to the Daily Star.
The report claims United are set to renew their interest in Gaitan after reportedly going close to agreeing a £30m move for the right winger last summer before the deal fell through.
The Star cite reports coming out of Portugal that suggest Sir Alex Ferguson sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old during Sunday nights clash with Porto, where they would have seen the attacker net the equaliser in a 2-2 draw.
The newspaper understand United were also there to assess Benfica centre-back Garay who has been in superb form this season for the current unbeaten Primeira Liga leaders.
The 26-year-old defender joined the Portuguese outfit in 2011 after two unsuccessful seasons with Real Madrid, but the Star believe Benfica would demand a huge fee for the impressive stopper as they would have to pay Madrid 50% of any sell-on fee.

Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Nani have all struggled to find form this season, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if United were looking to add another winger to their ranks and Gaitain has certainly been impressive for Benfica in recent seasons.
The Red Devils defence has also been uncharacteristically suspect this season, so again I wouldn’t be shocked if Fergie was lining up some defensive targets and there hasn’t been many more impressive in Europe than the 6 foot 4 inch Argentina defender, Garay.
But Fergie doesn’t often dip into the January transfer market and with his side holding a seven point advantage over rivals City, I really don’t expect him to be making any serious moves this month. Perhaps in the summer, but I would be majorly surprised if Ferguson splashed this sort of cash in the next couple of weeks.
