Liverpool Team News & Injury Update: Latest On Reina & Allen

Liverpool take on Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to continue their excellent recent form and maintain a late push for a top-four finish.
Ahead of the game, first-team coach Mike Marsh has given a team news and injury update to Liverpoolfc.com with the latest on goalkeeper Pepe Reina and midfielder Joe Allen.
Reina was forced to pull out of last weekend’s 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield shortly before kick off after failing a late fitness test on a calf injury. The Spaniard was replaced by Brad Jones in goal for that game but Marsh has confirmed the stopper is undergoing his rehabilitation and could be in the frame to face Southampton this weekend.
“He’s [Reina] coming along nicely. He’s got one of those injuries where you’re not sure how long it’s going to take,” Marsh told Liverpoolfc.com.
“He’s still getting treatment – with a bit of luck that will improve in the next couple of days and he’ll be available for Saturday.”
Liverpool are otherwise in good health with Brendan Rodgers not having any further injury concerns to contend with. However, Marsh did confirm that midfielder Joe Allen will require surgery on a troublesome shoulder injury and the procedure will be done sooner rather than later to ensure the Welshman is fit in time for pre-season. Marsh added:
“I think he will need surgery. We’ll try to get that out of the way sooner rather than later so he’ll be ready for pre-season.
“We’ll just see how the rest of the squad is before we commit to that.”
