The exciting 17-year-old was part of the Brazil youth team that won the Toulon tournament this year and it seems his impressive display’s have been enough to persuade Brendan Rodgers to make his move.
The Mirror claim the Reds have been keeping a close eye on the midfielder over the past year but have now opened discussions with his current club, Gremio, with a view to signing the youngster when he turns 18 on 28th June – as Brazilian rules state that players cannot be sold overseas until they are 18.
Matheus is yet to make his national championship debut for Gremio but did impress in Brazil’s state championships earlier this year and with Liverpool having a good relationship with the Brazilian outfit following the purchase of Lucas Leiva in 2007, they are said to be confident of wrapping up a deal in the coming days.
Bale staying
Next up and Sky Sports are carrying quotes from Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas who claims that chairman Daniel Levy has promised star man Gareth Bale wont be sold this summer.
Bale enjoyed a stunning season last campaign that saw him score 31 goals for club and country to land him a whole host of individual honours including the PFA Player of the Year.
Sky Sports claim the 23-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid this summer but manager AVB is confident his chairman will be able to hang on to the Welshman.
“We have the pledge of the chairman that Bale is not going to leave the club.” AVB is quoted as saying by Sky Sports
Tottenham have been known to cash in on their best players in the past with Luka Modric, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick all being sold for big money in recent transfer windows. However, it seems as though the north Londoners are determined to hang on to Bale with Levy seemingly intent on knocking back any interest that may come in from Real Madrid.
