Manchester United opened talks with Everton on Tuesday night over the signing of midfielder Marouane Fellaini, according to various reports today.
The giant Belgian has been strongly linked with a move to both Arsenal and United this summer after the 25-year-old made it clear he wanted to be playing in the Champions League next season.
However, with Arsene Wenger seemingly focussing his efforts on trying to land Luis Suarez from Liverpool, David Moyes has made the first move to lure Fellaini away from Goodison Park with Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws claiming that the champions opened talks with Everton on Tuesday night.
The source suggests that United are trying to negotiate a deal lower than the players £23m release clause – which expires on the 14th August – but while a fee is yet to be agreed, they expect the Belgian international to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Mirror are also running a story claiming Moyes has launched a bid to sign Fellaini after giving up on his pursuit of No.1 target Cesc Fabregas, who’s set to publicly commit his future to Barcelona this week.
The report suggests that new Everton boss Roberto Martinez will do all he can to hang on to the versatile midfielder and will demand the full buy-out figure, but Fellaini’s desire to play in the Champions League is likely to prove crucial.
Arsenal could yet enter the bidding with Gunners fans calling out for the club to invest heavily this summer, but the lure of playing for his former boss at the champions would heavily sway in United’s favour if the north Londoners did launch a rival bid.
