Mourinho Hoping To Beat Arsenal & Spurs To £45m-Rated Duo
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is hoping to fend off interest from Arsenal and Tottenham to sign midfielder Paul Pogba and striker Jackson Martinez this January.
Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Chelsea are linked with Paul Pogba and Jackson Martinez.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is hoping to fend off interest from Arsenal and Tottenham to sign midfielder Paul Pogba and striker Jackson Martinez in January, according to the Mirror.
Former Manchester United youngster Pogba has been in impressive form for Juventus since joining them on a free transfer in 2012, helping the Old Lady to the Serie A title last season as well as going on to become a full French international.
However, recent reports have suggested the 20-year-old may be agitating for a move due to the Italians dragging their heels over offering a new contract, with the youngster keen on being rewarded for his dramatic development over the past 12 months.
Juventus president Andrea Agnelli also admitted last week that the club will struggle to hold on to the midfielder if a big offer comes in, telling the Independent:
“If I was to judge it from a footballers’ point of view, Italy is no longer the final destination but a transit destination,”
“I am trying to think what will be of us in two or three years’ time if we get a massive offer for one of the best talents we have today, Pogba, the French 20-year-old.
“Would we be able to retain him? I don’t know. I don’t think at the moment we have the strength to retain such a player.
“Look at what happened to AC Milan. They had to give away Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to pay the cheques.
“At the end of the day you can be attractive, but you also need to have the economic strength.”
The Mirror claim that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to test Juve’s resolve with a bid for the £25m-rated midfielder this winter, with Arsene Wenger also said to be a long-term admirer of the Frenchman’s.
It remains to be seen whether Juventus would be willing to sell mid-season but you’d think it would be unlikely if they are still going strong in the Champions League.
A striker also appears to be Mourinho’s shopping list with the newspaper suggesting the Portuguese coach will table a £20m bid for Porto hot-shop Martinez but will face competition from London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, who are also thought to be keen.
The 27-year-old Colombian joined Porto 15 months ago and has made an instant impact, scoring 33 goals in just 37 games, so he’ll certainly bring an added goal threat if he does make the move to Stamford Bridge in January.
