Man Utd Transfer News: Moyes Holds Formal Talks Over £40m-Rated Midfielder
David Moyes has been in Italy to hold talks with Juventus about the possibility of re-signing Paul Pogba as well as express his interest in Arturo Vidal.
With the January transfer window now open for business clubs will be working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest Manchester United news, gossip and rumours. Today, it seems David Moyes has been busy this week trying to bring in two of his top targets.
The Daily Mail have an extensive report on the latest goings-on at Old Trafford and claim that Moyes has been in Italy to hold talks with Juventus chief Beppe Marotta about the possibility of re-signing Paul Pogba as well as express his interest in fellow midfielder Arturo Vidal.
Moyes was spotted among the crowd with first-team coach Jimmy Lumsden during Juve’s 4-1 comeback win over Cagliari on Sunday and it seems he took the chance to discuss a potential double swoop on the Serie A champions.
However, it doesn’t sound like the trip was much of a success with the Mail stating that Marotta insisted none of the clubs star players would be leaving this month, and he told reporters that they have no intention of cashing in on Pogba:
‘From our point of view, we do not want to sell Pogba and, so far, we have closed the door to any possible buyer.’ Marotta is quoted as saying by the Mail
Pogba left United on a free transfer just over 18 months ago after failing to agree a new deal and it appears the club are now desperate to try and lure him back to Old Trafford, despite the embarrassment of having to pay a potentially huge sum to re-sign him.
The report suggests that PSG’s interest in Pogba has seen his his value sky-rocket to £40m, and while the 20-year-old hasn’t entirely ruled out a return to England, it’s understood his preference would be to move to his home city of Paris if he was to leave Turin.
The youngster is certainly a one of the most talented midfielders in Europe right now and he’d be a sensational signing if United could somehow pull it off, either now or in the summer, but it doesn’t sound like they’ve made much headway in securing any potential deal.
Vidal has been an impressive force next to Pogba this season and would also represent an excellent piece of business if United were able to land him, but like Pogba, it doesn’t appear likely Juventus will sell despite their early exit from the Champions League.
Therefore any potential deals are more likely to happen in the summer, which won’t be any immediate comfort to Moyes who’s desperately trying to salvage United’s disappointing season and they are in real danger of missing out on a top four finish unless they bring in some quality this month.
Midfield has been pin-pointed by many fans and pundits as an area that needs addressing with Marouane Fellaini struggling for form and fitness and Tom Cleverley failing to push on this season. However, it seems as though the club will have to look elsewhere if they want to bring in some midfield quality in January, with Juve keen to keep hold of Pogba and Vidal.
