Chelsea beat Man Utd 3-1 in the weekend’s big game, while Arsenal remain top after beating Fulham 2-0. Do you agree with the Team of the Weekend?
Chelsea beat Manchester United 3-1 in the weekend’s big game, with the Blues earning a priceless three points against their title rivals thanks to a Samuel Eto’o hat-trick.
Arsenal stay top however after breaking down a stubborn Fulham side, with Santi Cazorla bagging both goals in the Gunners’ 2-0 win.
Manchester City remain hot on their heels, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side breaking the 100 goal barrier with an almost customary four goal haul at the Etihad, this time in the 4-2 win against Cardiff.
Liverpool were held 2-2 by Aston Villa at Anfield , with Tottenham moving level on points with them after a 3-1 win at Swansea.
Here is the Football-Talk Team of the Weekend for Gameweek 22:
Goalkeeper: Wojciech Szczesny, Arsenal
Yet another clean sheet for the Pole, who made a stunning stop to deny Steve Sidwell in the first half. It was Szczesny’s 100th Premier League game for Arsenal, and has now only conceded two goals in the last eight league games at the Emirates.
Credit must go to his opposite number on the day, Maarten Stekelenburg, for keeping Fulham in the game for long periods of Arsenal dominance.
Left-Back: Danny Rose, Tottenham
Solid and dependable, the 23-year-old laid the ball on a plate for Adebayor to put the game to bed with the third Spurs goal of the afternoon.
Centre-Back: John Terry, Chelsea
A commanding presence in the heart of the Chelsea defence, Terry was rarely troubled by a limp Man Utd attack on the day.
Centre-Back: Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal
Another towering performance from the French centre-half, who made quick-fire interceptions to deny Fulham in the second half.
Right-Back: Bacary Sagna, Arsenal
The Frenchman was as solid as a rock at the back, and had a blistering shot well saved by Stekelenburg in the Fulham goal.
Central Midfield: Yaya Toure, Manchester City
Another monstrous performance from the mighty Ivorian. Yaya has 14 goals from midfield in all competitions this season after grabbing another in the 4-2 win against Cardiff on Saturday. His powerful run from deep and crisp finish gave City the crucial third goal on the day.
Right Midfield: Ramires, Chelsea
Bossed midfield through sheer tenacity, and showed excellent distribution throughout. Certainly one of Ramires’ best showings this season.
Left Midfield: Yohan Cabaye, Newcastle
The Frenchman’s sweet brace against West Ham on Saturday spurred Newcastle to a 3-1 win, with his free-kick at the death particularly impressive.
Attacking Midfield: Santi Cazorla, Arsenal
Twinkle-toed, yet utterly devastating from Arsenal’s Spanish creator. Bagged the two goals that won the Gunners the match, and was a constant threat to Fulham’s rearguard.
Striker: Emmanuel Adebayor, Tottenham
Yet more goals for the Togonese striker’s ever growing portfolio of strikes, Adebayor is proving to be crucial to the Spurs cause of late, and he might as well be a new signing considering his complete non-existence from August to December under Andre Villas-Boas.
Striker: Samuel Eto’o, Chelsea
The first Chelsea player to score a hat-trick against Manchester United for 60 years, Eto’o was the consummate predatory striker on Sunday. A fantastic display of positioning and finishing, Jose Mourinho will be delighted to have one of his strikers grab the headlines for their goal-scoring!
Goal of the Weekend: Santi Cazorla vs. Fulham
