Liverpool + Tottenham Battle For Unsettled French Defender
Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer move for unsettled Paris Saint-Germain full-back Lucas Digne, according to talkSPORT.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Liverpool and Tottenham are linked with Lucas Digne.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer move for unsettled Paris Saint-Germain full-back Lucas Digne, according to talkSPORT.
The 20-year-old was hot property in the summer after a superb season with Lille and was understood to have held talks with Brendan Rodgers about a potential switch to Anfield before eventually opting to sign for PSG in an £12m deal.
However, his time at the Parc de Princes hasn’t gone according to plan as he’s failed to establish himself as a first team regular, with Maxwell’s presence at left-back has restricted him to just 2 appearances so far this season.
Understandably, Digne has become hugely frustrated with his lack of first team action as it’s likely to see him miss out on making Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the World Cup, and he’s now being tipped to make a move at the end of the season to resurrect his career.
talkSPORT claim that Liverpool are ready to renew their interest in the young defender with Rodgers still looking for another long-term option at left-back as Jose Enrique has struggled for fitness this season and on-loan signing Aly Cissokho has failed to impress on a consistent basis.
However, it seems the Merseysiders will now face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham with the report suggesting that the north Londoners are also keen on luring the player to England this summer.
Digne has represented France at every youth level from Under-16 to Under-21 and was part of the team that scooped the 2013 Under-20 World Cup last year, so it’s surely only a matter of time before he wins his first senior cap.
While he’s predominantly regarded as a left-back, he’s also capable of playing left midfield so his versatility will be appealing to the likes of Rodgers and Sherwood, and his pace and passing ability make him useful going forwards.
I’d fully expect Liverpool to bring in another left sided defender this summer if they don’t make Cissokho’s loan move permanent while Spurs only really have Danny Rose to call upon at left-back, so Digne could be an excellent signing for either club.
Whether they’ll be able to persuade PSG to cash in remains to be seen though.
