We have it all to do in order to make it through to the quarter finals of the Champions League after slumping to a 2-0 defeat to Bayern in the first leg last night.
The players made a terrific start and we were gifted the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Ozil was fouled in the area inside the opening 10 minutes. However, the German stepped up to take it himself and saw his weak penalty easily saved by Manuel Neuer to keep the scores level.
We were made to pay as Wojciech Szczesny was sent off just before half time and Munich went on to score two second half goals through Kroos and Muller to take control of the tie.
You could see Ozil’s head dropped after the miss and he struggled badly in the second half. His lack of defensive instincts left Nacho Monreal exposed as we were over-run down our left flank by the likes of Robben. I really think we need to get off the guys back. There is a huge amount of pressure and expectancy on his shoulders, and while he’s not been at his best lately, any player can miss a penalty.
Ozil’s poor performance was understandably one of the big talking points after the game and he’s now taken to Facebook to apologise and it sounds like he’s still kicking himself today about the penalty miss.
