Liverpool Eye Summer Move For Former Tottenham Defender
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is lining-up a move for a former Tottenham Hotspur defender this summer. Find out who the player in question is here.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Liverpool are linked with a former Tottenham defender.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Steven Caulker this summer, according to the Telegraph.
Caulker started off his career at Spurs and came through the youth ranks but found it difficult to make a breakthrough into the first team set-up. The defender enjoyed loan spells at Yeovil and Bristol City before Rodgers signed him on a season-long loan deal while in charge at Swansea City.
The 22-year-old impressed during his 26 appearances at the Liberty Stadium so was given a chance in the Spurs first team during the 2012/13 season, making 28 appearances in all competitions. However, he didn’t do enough to convince Andre Villas-Boas that he could be relied upon as a regular in the starting eleven, and he made an £8.5m move to Cardiff City last summer.
Caulker has been a rare shining light in what’s been a difficult season for the Bluebirds, with the Welsh club currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table and odds on to be relegated to the Championship, so it will be difficult for them to hang on to their captain if they fail to beat the drop.
The Telegraph claim Liverpool could be ready to offer him an escape route with Rodgers understood to be a huge fan and is keen to be reunited with the England international at Anfield this summer.
The Reds are likely to be in the market for defensive reinforcements at the end of the season with their leaky defence requiring some minor surgery this summer. Liverpool have arguably the most lethal attack in the Premier League but their inability to keep out the opposition at the other end needs addressing.
Despite this, the Merseysiders are still on course to finish above Tottenham and secure a Champions League place at the very least, and Rodgers will be keen to push on and build a squad capable of competing at the very top level on a consistent basis.
Caulker is certainly a talented defender and should be available at a reasonable price this summer, so he could be an astute buy if Liverpool decide to follow up their interest at the end of the season.
