Suarez Vows To Stay At Liverpool Even If They Miss Out On The Champions League
Striker Luis Suarez is desperate to get Liverpool back in the Champions League but has vowed to stay at the club even if they fail to finish in the top four
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Luis Suarez vows to stick by Liverpool.
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is desperate to get Liverpool back in the Champions League but has vowed to stay at the club even if they fail to finish in the top four, according to the Telegraph.
The controversial Uruguayan was strongly linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer after admitting his desire to play in Europe’s elite competition, before he was eventually persuaded to stay and signed a new long-term contract in December.
That new deal is believed to include a £70m buy-out clause that can be activated if Liverpool fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
Suarez has admitted he’s desperate to be back playing in the Champions League and would unsurprisingly give up the Golden Boot if he finishes as this seasons top goalscorer, if it meant Liverpool were back in the big time.
The striker has never played a Champions League tie at Anfield since joining the club from Ajax in 2011 but he says it would be an ‘unforgettable experience’ if it could happen, and has backed the Merseysiders to push for a top three finish this season.
“I’d actually prefer not to win this Golden Boot and for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League this season,”
“Any player would miss the Champions League. We’ve not been good enough since I’ve been here to qualify, but this could definitely be our year.
“It would be a frustration not to get fourth because we’ve done everything possible and given our maximum to qualify.
“Everyone says Champions League nights at Anfield are amazing – memories you guard forever. It would be an unforgettable experience and it’s been too long since that happened. I think to finish in the top three, which is still possible, would be incredible with the players we have in the squad.” Suarez is quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
However, while Suarez is clearly keen to get a taste of Champions League again, the 27-year-old insists he wont walk away from the club if they fail to finish achieve that goal this season. When asked if he would stay at Liverpool if they don’t finish in the top four, he said:
“I think so. I signed my new contract because I’m very happy here and I want to stay where I’m enjoying football and life. Playing in the Champions League isn’t dependent on that.”
This news will come as a huge boost to Liverpool as the big fear would be that Suarez would go if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season. While things are going well right now, a couple of bad results and things can change pretty quickly in football, so it will be comforting to know that Suarez won’t be agitating for a move if the club finish outside the top four.
However, in order for that to happen Liverpool would have to have a disastrous final 10 games. They currently sit second in the table on goal difference from Arsenal, with fifth-placed Tottenham six points adrift, so right now Liverpool have eyes on pulling off a sensational title win not worrying about hanging on to fourth spot.
