Liverpool have made it a clean sweep in the Premier League monthly awards for March with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez claiming the Player of the Month Award while Brendan Rodgers took the Manager Award.
The Reds won all five of their league games last month to see them to the top of the table and in with a real shout of winning the Premier League title this season.
Rodgers beat off competition from title-rival Manuel Pellegrini to land the Manager of the Month award for the second time this season after earning victories over Manchester United, Cardiff, Southampton, Tottenham and Sunderland.
The voters couldn’t separate Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez for the player of the month award, with the pair receiving the same number of votes, becoming the first players to share the monthly gong since Shearer and Sutton in November 1994.
Skipper Gerrard scored four goals during March while Suarez bagged six as the free-scoring Reds continued their excellent form to keep alive their hopes of landing the title.
After receiving his award, Rodgers said his award shows how much effort the team put in last month:
“It’s not an individual award really – all our successes are purely down to a team effort. We receive it gratefully. We’ve been on a wonderful run as a team and over the course of March we’ve had some outstanding fixtures and results.
“We are very honoured and humble to receive it. Up until now we’ve been performing really well and we’ve been working really hard. Our results are demonstrating that the improvements are taking place.
“We’ve got a really exciting group of young players here that are improving all the time and the senior players have been outstanding for me. They have really been wanting to take on board new concepts and ideas and they’ve been taking that on the field and performing magnificently well.
“So for us at this point our objective is still to make sure we qualify for the Champions League – that objective hasn’t changed and that isn’t secured yet. So at this moment in time the concentration is just on the performance and the next game.” Rodgers is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News
March was certainly an excellent month for Liverpool and Rodgers could take a huge step towards securing a consecutive Manager of the Month Award if he could claim victory over Manchester City on Sunday!
