Suarez Set For Barcelona Medical After Liverpool Accept €80m Offer
Barcelona have reached an agreement with Liverpool to buy striker Luis Suarez for €80m and the player is now set to travel to Spain to undergo a medical.
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Luis Suarez looks like he’s off to Spain.
Barcelona have reached an agreement with Liverpool to buy controversial striker Luis Suarez for €80m (£63m) and the player is now set to travel to Spain to undergo a medical, according to reports this evening.
Barca officials met with Liverpool chief Ian Ayre in London on Wednesday to discuss a potential deal for Suarez and reports claimed that an opening bid of around €70m (£55.7m) was rejected by the Merseysiders.
It appears further negotiations have now taken place as the Metro are citing reports coming from Catalan TV Station TV3 who are claiming that after fresh talks this morning, Liverpool have now accepted Barcelona’s improved €80m (£63m) offer.
The report suggests that the Reds were adamant they wouldn’t sell for anything less than £75m, but have been forced to change their position after Suarez made it clear he wanted to leave and the Uruguayan hitman will now head to Spain this weekend to undergo a medical before signing a five-year deal.
Spanish outlet Marca support these reports, although they suggest that the two clubs have yet to agree on how the fee will be paid and believe that Barcelona want to offload Alexis Sanchez ‘in the coming hours’ before finalising the purchase of Suarez.
There is no indication that Sanchez will be part of any deal involving Suarez, so the Chilean attacker will have to decide where his future lies pretty quickly so the Suarez deal can be concluded.
Nothing official has come from either club as yet so it’s probably best to take these reports from Spain with a pinch of salt until things are formally announced, but it does looks inevitable that Suarez is off. It will bring to an end a hugely disappointing few weeks for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers looks set to lose his star player who’s 31 goals last season almost led the club to the Premier League title.
However, the silver lining is the Northern Irishman will have a sizeable transfer fund to replace the striker and should have plenty left over to strengthen other areas of the squad.
