Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed the purchase of Calum Chambers from Southampton and has justified spending around £16million on the teenager.
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsene Wenger confirms the purchase of Calum Chambers.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed the purchase of Calum Chambers from Southampton and has justified spending around £16m on the teenager.
News broke over the weekend that Chambers was set for a move to north London after undergoing a medical and agreeing personal terms on Friday after the Gunners had agreed a deal though to be in the region of £16m.
Although nothing official has come out from either club as yet, Arsene Wenger has confirmed Chambers is set for a move to the Emirates and says the versatile youngster will be able to cover at centre-back, right-back and in central midfield.
The 19-year-old broke into the Southampton first team last season and has made just 18 Premier League starts, but the French coach revealed that he’s ready to take a gamble and pay a large fee because the England starlet has a big future ahead of him.
Wenger is quoted as saying in the Telegraph.
“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in this three positions.”
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
Chambers is expected to be officially unveilled as an Arsenal player within the next 48 hours and will become our fourth major signing of the summer after we confirmed a deal for goalkeeper David Ospina on Sunday.
While the teenager can fill three positions, he’s likely to act as cover for Mathieu Debuchy at right-back which could see Carl Jenkinson sent out on loan this summer to gain some valuable first team experience.
Chambers is now the third Southampton youngster to join the club following on from Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and he certainly has the potential to go on and become an important part of the squad just like his predecessors.
