Arsenal have made an improved offer worth €20m (£15.8m) for Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos with the understood to be keen on making the move to North London, according to reports.
Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer window closes on Monday night with a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen still very much on the agenda.
Reports on Thursday claimed that we had made a €14m (£11m) bid for Papastathopoulos and although the offer was rejected, it was then reported that we had held initial talks with the 26-year-old’s representatives about a potential move to the Emirates.
It seems those talks must have gone well as the Express are claiming that Arsene Wenger has gone back in with an improved offer worth €20m (£15.8m) for the Greek international.
The latest bid is still shy of Dortmund’s £20m asking price but the newspaper suggests that we are confident of getting a deal done as the player is believed to have made it clear to the Germans that he wants to make the move to North London.
Papastathopoulos is a centre-back by trade but is also capable of playing at right-back or as a defensive midfielder so he’ll be able to over all the positions Arsene wants to strengthen if he ends up making the move to Arsenal.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Dortmund accept our latest offer but with the window closing on Monday night, things are going to have to start moving quickly if we want to get the deal done in time. It looks like it’s going to be a busy couple of days, so let’s hope Arsene manages to get at least two deals done and Papastathopoulos plus either a defensive midfielder or a striker would make for a good summer.
