The 20-time Premier League champions edged the first half with Wayne Rooney missing their best chance while he also had a goal ruled out for a close offside call.
Newcastle improved after the break and United goalkeeper David De Gea made a couple of excellent close range saves to keep the scores level.
With the game looking set to end 0-0, Rooney’s persistence caused problems in the Newcastle back line and Krul rushed to clear a back-pass which fell straight to Ashley Young who fired home an 89th minute winner.
The win sees Utd keep pace with third-placed Arsenal after the Gunners beat QPR 2-1, while Liverpool and Tottenham also registered victories to keep the race for the top four wide open.
