Chelsea Team News: Mourinho Confirms Double Injury Doubt + Quartet Ruled Out
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Eden Hazard and Petr Cech are doubts to take part in Sunday’s final game of the season against Sunderland.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Eden Hazard and Petr Cech are doubts to take part in Sunday’s final game of the season against Sunderland.
Hazard is a major doubt for the game after undergoing emergency dental surgery on Thursday afternoon to remove three wisdom teeth.
Mourinho hopes the playmaker will be able to play some part at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but if he’s ruled out, it will be the first league game that Hazard has missed this season.
Cech was ruled out of last weekend’s defeat to West Brom with a calf strain and he too remains a doubt to take on Sunderland this weekend.
The Czech international is due to take part in training today and Mourinho is desperate for him to be passed fit so he can feature on Sunday in what could be his final game for the club, with the keeper tipped to leave Chelsea this summer.
The Blues boss also confirmed that he hopes to give some game-time to youngsters Andreas Christensen and Jeremie Boga at some point this weekend.
Mourinho told reporters today:
“Well, I hope [Hazard will be able to play],” said Mourinho.
“But I would never have allowed him to do what he did if I thought it would be this big. His mouth is in trouble. I don’t know if he can [play]. He had dental surgery, three teeth. But now there’s an infection and he’s a bit in trouble. If he’s a risk he won’t play, but he won’t train today.”
“I’m not sure Petr is fit, but he’s working hard to try and be available,”
“Today is the first session he’ll do with the team. I would like him to be fit, yes, but let’s see. If he is fit he will play at some point. And I hope to play Christensen and Boga, too.”
Chelsea are certain to be without Cesc Fabregas as the Spaniard serves his one-match suspension following his bizarre sending off at the Hawthorns last weekend.
Brazilian midfielder Oscar remains out with a thigh injury, Ramires misses out through illness while Kurt Zouma is still nursing a knee injury so Mourinho is guaranteed to be without four of his key first team players against the Black Cats.
However, top scorer Diego Costa is set to start in attack once more having come through the West Brom game last week unscathed.
Chelsea go into the final day of the season as Premier League champions and they’ll finally be handed the trophy and collect their winners medals after wrapping-up the title against Crystal Palace earlier this month.
