Chelsea began their defence of the Premier League title with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge after Thibaut Courtois was sent off in the second half.
The Blues looked to have gotten off to the perfect start when Oscar’s 22nd minute free-kick evaded everybody in the box to nestle in to the corner of Lukasz Fabianski’s net for 1-0.
Swansea hit-back within minutes when Gomis’s header was well saved by Courtois only for summer signing Andre Ayew to bundle the ball home for 1-1 in the 28th minute.
Chelsea retook the lead almost immediately when Willian’s cross took a huge deflection off Fernandez to loop over Fabianski to give the hosts a 2-1 half-time lead.
However, the game turned on its head shortly after half-time when Courtois was sent-off for bringing down Gomis on the edge of the area and to rub salt into the wound, the referee also awarded a penalty.
Gomis dusted himself off to beat substitute goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to make it 2-2 in the 54th minute. The Welsh side pushed for a winner but the 10-men of Chelsea held on to secure a point – although it wasn’t the 3 that Mourinho would have been hoping for.
