Deadline day has finally arrived and managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the new season, so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd complete the signing of Anthony Martial….
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Anthony Martial from AS Monaco on a four-year deal with the French youngster handed the number 9 shirt at Old Trafford.
News broke late on Sunday night that United were in talks to sign Martial as Louis van Gaal tried desperately to bring in another versatile attacker during the closing stages of the transfer window.
The French Football Federation then revealed on Monday that the 19-year-old had been given permission to leave the French national squad to travel to England to wrap up his move to Old Trafford.
A medical was completed on Tuesday morning and it appears personal terms were also a formality as United announced they had completed the signing of Martial from Monaco on a long-term deal a short time ago.
A statement on ManUtd.com read:
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Anthony Martial has completed his transfer from AS Monaco. Anthony joins on a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
Having sealed his move, the French youngster told the clubs website that he was excited to be joining Manchester United and couldn’t wait to work under van Gaal.
“I am so excited to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at AS Monaco and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.
“I have always wanted to play in the Premier League and to join the biggest club in the world is what every young footballer dreams of. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and working with Louis van Gaal who has achieved so much in his career.”
van Gaal was also delighted to have wrapped-up the signing of Martial, calling him a natural talent, and the Dutch boss believes Old Trafford is the right place for him to continue his development.
“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.” van Gaal told ManUtd.com
“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”
No official fee has been released by either club but the BBC claim United have paid Monaco an initial £36m – making him the most expensive teenager in the history of football – although the fee could rise to £58m depending on performance-based add ons.
United have been in need of attacking reinforcements following the exits of Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen and Adnan Januzaj to Borussia Dortmund, and Martial is going to be a useful addition as he can play anywhere across the front three positions.
The teenager has scored 15 goals in his 70 appearances for Monaco so far and although he’s far from the finished product, he has bags of ability and has the potential to become a world class player over the next few years.
United have now confirmed that Martial will wear the No.9 shirt during the next season which will put added pressure on his young shoulders, but I’m sure he’s confident he has what it takes to live up to such an iconic number at Old Trafford.
