[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-2 Watford: Ozil Shines Again For Woeful Gunners
Arsenal’s hold of the FA Cup came to an abrupt end as Watford left the Emirates with a 2-1 win this afternoon. Here are my ratings from the game:
Arsenal’s hold of the FA Cup came to an abrupt end as Watford booked their place in the last four with a 2-1 win at the Emirates this afternoon.
Some poor defending allowed Watford to open the scoring in the 50th minute as Odion Ighalo turned Gabriel to fire home before the visitors made it 2-0 in spectacular fashion with Adlene Guedioura smashing home a stunner from the edge of the area.
Danny Welbeck came off the bench to make it 1-2 in the 88th minute and the striker then somehow missed a glorious chance to force a replay as he sliced wide with the goal at his mercy. We couldn’t find another goal so Watford progress to the last four leaving our season hanging by a thread.
Here are my ratings from the game:
Ospina 6/10 | Not at fault for the opening goal and couldn’t get close to the Guedioura stunner.
Chambers 5/10 | Saw plenty of the ball down the right side but his final delivery was hugely disappointing.
Mertesacker 6/10 | Made some excellent interceptions in the first half but should have done more to prevent the Deeney flick-on which led to the opener.
Gabriel 4/10 | Very luck not to see red for a poor tackle on Deeney and was at fault for the Ighalo goal. Not a great day for the Brazilian.
Gibbs 5/10 | Showed plenty of willing to get forward but wasted some good opportunities to get the ball in the box.
Elneny 6.5/10 | Another solid performance from the Egyptian international. Covered a lot of ground.
Coquelin 6.5/10 | Looked comfortable alongside Elneny and broke up play nicely.
Campbell 6/10 | Missed a good chance to break the deadlock just before half time.
Ozil 7.5/10 | Picked up a superb assist for the Welbeck goal and was at the heart of all our good play once again, show-casing some stunning passes.
Sanchez 6.5/10 | Quiet in the first half but much more involved after the break but despite plenty of effort on his part, things just didn’t go his way.
Giroud 5/10 | Anonymous for much of the game and was easy pray for the packed Watford defence.
Subs:
Walcott 5/10 | No impact at all from the bench.
Welbeck 7/10 | Scored a lovely goal to give us hope but should certainly have had a second when he sliced wide with the goal gaping.
Iwobi 5.5 | Keen to get on the ball and hit the post with a fine effort.

We’re out of the FA Cup and almost certainly going to exit the Champions League on Wednesday night so our season is in danger of falling apart [if it hasn’t already]. We’ll have to see how Spurs and Leicester get on in their league games over the next two days but if they both win, then anything but victory at Everton next Saturday will see our slim title hopes all-but end.
