Manchester United’s Europa League campaign got off to a nightmare start after they crashed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Feyenoord on Thursday night.
Jose Mourinho left behind a number of first team players back in Manchester including skipper Wayne Rooney while he also left Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench.
However, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford lining-up United still had a strong side out but they really struggled to get going in Rotterdam.
The game was largely a dull affair with both sides struggling to create clear cut chances and consigned to speculative long-range efforts on goal. Martial possibly missed United’s best chance in the first half as he lashed wide from the edge of the area.
Feyenoord started to cause more problems as the game went on and eventually grabbed a late winner as Tonny Vilhena cooly slotted home in the 79th minute – although Nicolai Jorgensen appeared to be offside before he raced clear to set up the midfielder.
There was no way back for United and they’ve now lost four consecutive European away games for the first time in their history.
