Forgotten Man Utd Duo Named In 21-Man Squad For Fenerbahce Clash But Trio Miss Out
Manchester United have announced a 21-man squad ahead of their trip to Istanbul to take on Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Manchester United have announced a 21-man squad ahead of their trip to Istanbul to take on Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Jose Mourinho has decided to recall Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Armenian international was frozen out of the first team squad since recovering from a thigh injury last month.
Mkhitaryan hasn’t featured for United since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the start of September but the playmaker will now be hoping to finally make his comeback against the Turkish giants tomorrow evening.
Forgotten defender Phil Jones – who is yet to make an appearance this season – is also back in the first team fold after recovering from a knee injury that’s kept him out for almost two months.
However, fellow centre-back Chris Smalling once again misses out as he continues to recover from a foot injury that’s kept him out of the last three games so he remains on the sidelines with Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia.
Michael Carrick is also left back in Manchester, presumably to rest ahead of Sunday’s Swansea game with Ander Herrera set to miss the Premier League clash through suspension following his sending off against Burnley.
Memphis Depay is another key name who hasn’t been included in the 21-man travelling party as the Dutch international continues to struggle to make an impression under new boss Mourinho.
Bastian Schweinsteiger returned to first team training earlier this week after being exiled from the squad but the German international isn’t eligible for the group stages of the Europa League.
United head to the Sukru Saracoglyu stadium tomorrow night sitting level on points with first-placed Feyenoord in Group A after beating Fenerbahce 4-1 at Old Trafford two weeks ago so the Red Devils will be looking to go one step closer to securing qualification to the knockout stages with a positive result.
Here is the full United squad heading to Turkey:
De Gea, Romero, Johnstone; Blind, Jones, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Shaw; Fellaini, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Mata, Pogba, Schneiderlin, Young; Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rashford, Rooney.
