Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of long-term target Thomas Muller after he admitted his frustration at being left on the bench at Bayern Munich, according to the Express.
Muller has been with Bayern his entire professional career having come through the clubs youth academy and he’s gone on to make almost 400 appearances for the first team since making his debut in 2009.
The 27-year-old has scored 156 goals to help Munich dominate German football having won 5 Bundesliga titles as well as 6 domestic cup competitions over the past seven years, while he also played a key role in helping them lift the Champions League in 2013.
However, Muller’s life at the Allianz Arena has not been so easy this campaign as he’s struggling to make an impact under Carlo Ancelotti with just 4 goals in all competitions to his name so far this season.
His questionable form led to the German international being left on the bench for Bayern’s crunch showdown with second-placed RB Leipzig before the winter break last month leading to questions being asked about whether he fits in to Ancelotti’s new system.
Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus recently claimed that Muller doesn’t really have a natural place in the Italian coaches team.
“There is not really a position in Ancelotti’s formation that suits him [Muller],” Matthaus is quoted as saying by the Express.
Muller has now cast doubt over his future after admitting to reporters that he was unhappy at being dropped to the bench by Ancelotti. He’s quoted as saying to Bild by the Express:
“The last game against Leipzig was not optimal for me personally, since I did not play,”
“There was more space than in the games before. It was a game I could have enjoyed.
“Of course, I’m not sitting there with a grin on the bench.”
The attackers comments will no doubt alert Manchester United as they’ve been linked with the German forward in recent transfer windows with former boss Louis van Gaal reportedly desperate to lure Muller to Old Trafford [source: Express].
The Express claim that United are long-term admirers of Muller and Jose Mourinho may renew the clubs interest if the player becomes available for transfer at any point in the near future.
United have regularly shown they are willing to spend big money on world class players so it would be no surprise if they were to test Bayern’s resolve with a mega offer for Muller in the summer if he continues to be out-of-favour during the second half of the season.

I think the German ace would be a superb signing as he’s capable of playing anywhere across the attacking positions including up front or on the wing so he’d give Mourinho plenty of options if a deal was ever to be agreed.
