Mourinho Confirms Fresh Injury Blow Following Man Utd’s Defeat To Tottenham
Jose Mourinho has confirmed Marouane Fellaini suffered a fresh injury blow during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Wembley last night.
Jose Mourinho has confirmed Marouane Fellaini suffered a fresh injury blow during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Wembley last night.
Fellaini was once again named on the bench for Wednesday night’s clash as Mourinho went with Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in a two-man central midfield.
United struggled to contain Spurs as the north Londoners raced in to a comfortable 2-0 lead and Mourinho decided to mix things up by introducing Fellaini for Pogba in the 63rd minute.
However, the Belgian international lasted just seven minutes as he aggravated a long-term knee injury shortly after coming on and had to be subbed back off in place of Ander Herrera.
This caused a stir on social media as some fans hadn’t realised Fellaini was injured and they thought Mourinho had simply hauled the midfielder off after just seven minutes.
However, Mourinho confirmed after the game that Fellaini had in fact suffered a knee injury but he’s hopeful the issue won’t see the 30-year-old sidelined for too long.
Mourinho told ManUtd.com:
“I think I was unlucky with Fellaini as I wanted to change a little bit the dynamic of the team. After a couple of minutes, he was injured. It’s always the same thing. It is the lateral ligament. I don’t think it’s a big, big thing but he was immediately feeling something and telling us he couldn’t carry on.”
This is another setback for Fellaini as the midfielder has been restricted to just 3 Premier League starts this season due to a knee ligament injury so he’ll be disappointed to have aggravated the problem last night.
We’ll have to wait and see how serious this latest issue is but Fellaini will now be considered as a major doubt for Saturday’s clash with Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford.
United will be desperate to get back on track this weekend following last night’s defeat – which has left them trailing leaders Man City by 15 points while fifth-placed Tottenham are now just five points behind.
