Liverpool take on Man City in their Champions League clash tonight. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Liverpool will look to book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League when they take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this evening.
The Reds put one foot in the last four of the competition after producing a magnificent performance to beat City 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg last Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp insists the Merseysiders aren’t favourites to progress despite their lead but it would require a monumental effort from Pep Guardiola’s side to turn this tie around.
Liverpool warmed up for the game with a rather mundane 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday but it was a lot more exciting at the Etihad where City blew a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Man Utd.
Guardiola says he’ll learn a lot about his players from how they respond to the recent disappointments but the Premier League champions-elect have it all to do if they’re to book their place in the semi-final this evening.
Team news
City are set to welcome Sergio Aguero back in to the starting eleven after he made a substitute appearance against United on Saturday having recovered from a knee injury.
John Stones is a doubt after missing the derby with a muscle injury and while Benjamin Mendy is back in training after recovering from a serious knee problem, he’s not expected to feature just yet.
Liverpool have been boosted by the return of Mohamed Salah as the Egyptian international trained yesterday after missing the Merseyside derby with a groin problem.
Andrew Robertson is also set to return at left-back from a calf injury while Alberto Moreno has recovered from a thigh problem, however, Jordan Henderson is suspended.
Emre Can may struggle to play again this season due to a niggling back injury while Adam Lallana, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all remain on the sidelines.
Expected line-ups
Predicted Score
Man City 2-1 Liverpool: Obviously the Reds are in the driving seat but they won’t be taking anything for granted as City won the league game 5-0 at the Etihad earlier in the season and they’re capable of producing that kind of performance again. City have lost just one of their last 13 Champions League home games while Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five away trips in Europe. I do think City will win the game tonight but I don’t see them keeping a clean sheet so predict Liverpool to book their place in the last four with a 4-2 aggregate win.
