Fresh Man Utd Blow: Key Man A Major Injury Doubt For Tottenham Clash
Man Utd could be without Alexis Sanchez for the visit of Tottenham after Jose Mourinho confirmed the attacker is a major doubt for the game
Manchester United are facing the prospect of being without Alexis Sanchez for the visit of Tottenham after Jose Mourinho confirmed the attacker is a major doubt for the game next week.
Sanchez has been a regular in Mourinho’s side since making a move from Arsenal back in January and he was once again pencilled-in to start against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday but rumours emerged over the weekend that he was set to miss the game at the Amex Stadium.
The Chilean international wasn’t spotted among the players that travelled down to the South Coast on Saturday afternoon and he wasn’t included in the 18-man squad that was announced an hour before kick-off.
Sanchez picked up a knock in training late last week and was replaced by Anthony Martial in the starting line-up against Brighton yesterday afternoon with Mourinho confirming the South American attacker is expected to be out for “one or two weeks”.
The good news is Sanchez’s injury doesn’t appear too serious but he’s still considered a major doubt for Man Utd’s crucial clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford a week on Monday.
Mourinho is quoted by the Sun as saying:
“I don’t know really. Let’s wait for the results of the studies, but I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.”
“Alexis was going to play but he had a little problem, so we had to decide to give an opportunity to another attacking player.”
Sanchez’s absence would be another blow to United as they look to bounce back from Sunday’s shock 3-2 defeat at Brighton which has been described by some pundits as one of the worst performances of the Mourinho era.
Martial failed to take his opportunity as he struggled to influence the game before being substituted in the 60th minute while Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford also failed to make an impact in the final third.
Sanchez may not have shown his best form since moving to Old Trafford but he has the ability to do something special at any moment so Man Utd will be praying he can make a swift recovery and get himself fit to face Tottenham.
If the Chilean superstar misses that game then he could make his return for the trip to Burnley on September 2nd before the Premier League breaks-up for the international break.
