Man Utd team news: Solskjaer confident of major injury boost ahead of Chelsea clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident of at least one injury boost ahead of Man Utd’s huge showdown against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday

Manchester United need a win to boost their hopes of finishing in the top four when they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s provided a team news and injury update including the latest on the fitness of Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay.

Herrera hasn’t featured for United since the 2-1 victory over Watford at the end of last month as the Spaniard has been forced to miss United’s last six matches with a niggling hamstring injury.

However, the 29-year-old has returned to full training this week and Solskjaer is confident the midfielder will be passed fit to be back in contention for Sunday’s crucial showdown with Chelsea.

The Man Utd boss also offered an update on McTominay after he missed Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford with an unspecified knock. Solskjaer confirmed the midfielder will undergo a fitness test today to determine whether he’ll be involved against Chelsea this weekend.

The Norwegian told ManUtd.com:

“[There are] three games left of the season and Ander has been training, he’s been enthusiastic. He’ll probably be involved. I think he’s fit enough to be involved on Sunday. I can’t guarantee it, because there’s still two days left, but he’s trained the last two days.”

“Scott failed a fitness test on Wednesday morning, so he’s going to have another one today [Friday] probably to see if he’s available,”

Herrera’s return would be a big boost for Man Utd as they’ve missed his tenacity in the middle of the park over the past six matches so Solskjaer will be praying the Spaniard is in contention on Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Phil Jones is a major doubt after missing the last two matches with a knock while Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia are also set to miss out once again having been sidelined in recent weeks.

United head into the weekend action sitting sixth in the Premier League table but they can move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea if they beat the West Londoners so it’s all to play for at Old Trafford on Sunday.
