Man Utd confirm double injury blow as 5 players are ruled out of Southampton trip
Manchester United have confirmed a major double injury blow with Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Southampton.
Manchester United have confirmed a major double injury blow with Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Southampton.
Shaw picked up a hamstring problem during the first half of United’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last weekend and after initially receiving some treatment, he was eventually replaced by Ashley Young in the 34th minute.
Martial was able to complete the full ninety minutes against the Eagles as he looked to continue his fine start to the Premier League season that saw him score in each of United’s opening two games.
However, the Frenchman suffered a thigh problem during the latter stages of the game last weekend and Man Utd have confirmed on ManUtd.com that both Shaw and Martial will miss Saturday’s trip to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to provide a full update on their injuries during his pre-match press conference on Friday morning but their absence this weekend will come as a big blow to the United boss as both players have been important first team players so far this campaign.
Young is now expected to deputise at left-back against Southampton while Marcus Rashford could start through the middle in place of Martial with the likes of Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood pushing for starts in attack.
The up-coming international break will come at a good time as it will allow Shaw and Martial time to recover while Diogo Dalot will also use the two-week hiatus to continue his recovery from an unspecified injury that will keep him out of the Southampton game.
Long-term absentee Eric Bailly is obviously still unavailable as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury while Timothy Fosu-Mensah is also working his way back to full fitness from a knee operation.
It means Solskjaer will be without at least five first team squad players for Saturday’s clash with Southampton as he looks to get United back on track following their shock loss at home to Palace.
