Man Utd team news: OGS reveals injury boost but 24y/o set for spell on the sidelines
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an update on the fitness of Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw ahead of Man Utd’s trip to Southampton.
Manchester United will be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday lunchtime.
Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s provided an update on the fitness of Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.
Shaw picked up a hamstring injury during the first half of United’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend and after initially trying to continue, the full-back was eventually replaced by Ashley Young in the 34th minute.
The 24-year-old is now facing a spell on the sidelines as he’s been ruled out of tomorrow’s trip to Southampton and Solskjaer expects the defender to be out for a ‘week or two’ following the upcoming international break so he’ll also be a doubt for United’s games against Leicester and West Ham next month.
However, there is slightly better news regarding Martial. The striker suffered a minor thigh problem against Palace last time out and he’s already been ruled out of this weekend’s game with Southampton.
But the international break will come at a good time for Martial as Solskjaer is hopeful the Frenchman will be available to face Leicester when the Foxes head to Old Trafford in two weeks time.
Solskjaer told ManUtd.com:
“They’re doing okay but they won’t be involved in this game. After the international break, hopefully Anthony will be ready for the Leicester game and Luke maybe another week or two after that.”
“They’ve got slight injuries that they picked up in the game against Palace and in one respect it’s a positive game to get it because it’s international break for them and they won’t miss too many games.”
Shaw’s absence will be a blow for United as he’s established himself as Solskjaer’s first choice left-back over the past six months but Young is expected to fill-in while he recovers from his hamstring strain.
It will be interesting to see who comes in for Martial as Alexis Sanchez has joined Inter Milan on loan so youngster Mason Greenwood could be handed a start against the Saints this weekend.
Elsewhere, Man Utd will continue to be without Diogo Dalot tomorrow as he’s still not fit to return to the squad while Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are both recovering from serious knee injuries.
