Harry Kane was on target as 10-men Tottenham held on to secure a vital 2-1 victory over Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon.

It looked like Tottenham were heading for a routine victory when Tanguy Ndombele found the back of the net in the 24th minute after being teed-up by Heung-min Son 18 yards from goal – although the Saints goalkeeper may have felt he should have done better.

Southampton were given hope they could get something from the game just seven minutes later when Spurs right-back Serge Aurier was sent off for a second booking following a shirt pull.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris then gifted the visitors an equaliser in the 38th minute as his error just a yard from his own goal-line allowed Danny Ings to tap home to make it 1-1.

With their man advantage and the scores level, Southampton would have felt confident of going on to win the match, however, it was Spurs who went ahead when Kane fired home on the turn following a great team move just before half-time.

Southampton pushed to find a way back into the game after the break but Tottenham defended well to see out the second half and secure a huge 2-1 win that sends them back into the top four.
