Man Utd suffer major double injury blow ahead of Liverpool showdown
Manchester United have suffered a major injury blow ahead of their clash with Liverpool after David De Gea picked up a groin problem playing for Spain
Manchester United have suffered a major injury blow ahead of their clash with Liverpool after David De Gea picked up a groin problem playing for Spain on Tuesday night, according to the Mirror.
De Gea initially felt the injury during the first half of Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden but after being assessed at half-time, the United number one decided to continue.
However, the 29-year-old collapsed to the floor after making a clearance shortly after the break and limped off to be replaced by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 59th minute.
Spain went on to score a late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw at the Friends Arena and seal qualification to Euro 2020 but head coach Robert Moreno confirmed after the match that De Gea had felt pain in his adductor muscle.
The Mirror claim early indications suggest the injury isn’t serious but De Gea will be fully assessed by Man Utd’s medical team and undergo a scan today before the full extent of the injury is know.
However, even a minor groin injury will see De Gea sidelined for at least a week so the Mirror says the Spaniard is expected to be ruled out of Sunday’s huge showdown with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The news will come as a huge blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to get Man Utd’s campaign back on track after enduring their worst start to a league season in 30 years.
Sergio Romero is set to deputise between the sticks for United against Liverpool this weekend and the Argentinean international could be set for a run in the team if De Gea is ruled out for a significant period of time.
In a double blow for United and Solskjaer, The Times are reporting that Luke Shaw is also struggling to be fit for the visit of Liverpool this weekend.

The left-back has been on the sidelines with a hamstring injury for the past six weeks and there were hopes he would return against the league leaders on Sunday afternoon.
However, it appears the Liverpool game may come too soon for Shaw so the defender will be aiming to make his comeback during Man Utd’s Europa League trip to Partizan Belgrade next Thursday.
Paul Pogba is also struggling with a foot injury but there is some positive news for Manchester United as Anthony Martial is expected to return from a thigh problem while Aaron Wan-Bissaka has recovered from tonsillitis.
United head into the weekend action sitting 12th in the table and just two points above the relegation zone so Solskjaer is under pressure to get a positive result against the run-away league leaders on Sunday.
