Spurs Ace: I Couldn’t Even Afford To Buy An Ice Cream
Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker claims he won’t let his new found wealth go to his head.
The England prospect admits he came from humble beginnings and says he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite being thrust in to the limelight at such a young age.
Walker has promised to use the financial rewards that come with being a professional footballer to help repay his family, who have helped him throughout his career. Walker told the People:
“We lived in council flats and the ice-cream man used to come up when we’d be playing football on the green and everyone would scatter, whistling for their mums.
“Once I remember shouting, ‘Mum, can I get a pound for an ice cream?’ and she said, ‘I haven’t got a pound, Kyle’. People take so much for granted but I will never forget that.
“I’m going to repay my mum so much because she has kept my feet on the ground.
”I don’t go throwing money about – if I did, I think my mum and dad would be on my back because that’s not the way I’ve been brought up.
“I’ve got two sisters, too. I have to look after my family now because I wouldn’t be the person I am or the footballer I am without them. I was a Sheffield United fan from when my grandad, who’s sadly passed away now, got a season ticket for me when I was four. I know how the Spurs fans would have felt when we beat Arsenal because if that had been a Sheffield derby, I’d have been on the Kop at Bramall Lane … dancing.”
