Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe couldn’t hide his delight following his clubs latest signing. Rafael van der Vaart has joined Spurs on a four year contract following a post deadline day move from Spanish giants Real Madrid for just £8million. It is a shrewd piece of business on the part of manager Harry Redknapp and chairman Daniel Levy who did their utmost to thrash out a deal with hours to spare.
Defoe has lavished praise on the new arrival by complimenting his technical ability. Both crossed paths in an Under-21 international some years back and the Dutchman certainly made an impression in front of the England striker.
“It’s an amazing signing. What a player.” he told The Mirror.
“I remember playing for England Under-21’s against Rafael when he was with Holland’s Under-21 side and he was a special player back then.”
“He will definitely help the team. He will always wants the ball, he is technically gifted and he is at his best playing between the lines and making things happen.”
“It’s an excellent signing and everyone is looking forward to playing alongside him.”
Van der Vart himself is delighted and has described his transfer as “beautiful”.
“I want to play beautiful football again, if possible every week, with a beautiful club. I am totally happy.” he stated.
