Manchester United take on Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday looking to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The squad flew out to Germany on Tuesday afternoon but were forced to leave striker Robin van Persie back in Manchester after he failed to recover from a groin injury. The Dutchman missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Cardiff and was unable to train today so won’t be available for the Leverkusen clash.
Captain Nemanja Vidic is also missing despite taking part in training on Tuesday so Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are expected to continue at the heart of defence.
Phil Jones and Rafael took part in full training before the squad departed and are in contention to return after missing the weekend action. Jones could be deployed in midfield alongside Tom Celverley as Marouane Fellaini is unavailable through suspension after being sent off against Real Sociedad while Michael Carrick remains sidelined through injury.
Danny Welbeck made a successful return from injury with a substitute appearance on Sunday so could make his first start for several weeks, while Javier Hernandez is likely to continue up front in place of RVP. Nani and Ashley Young are pushing for recalls but Antonio Valencia may keep the right-wing spot.
