Manchester United welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon looking to bounce back from Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to Everton.
The champions slipped further behind in the title race with a 1-0 loss to the Toffees so victory over the in-form Geordies this weekend will be vital in keeping alive any realistic hopes of retaining their title. However, David Moyes’ squad have been hit by injury and suspension problems in attack.
Striker Wayne Rooney will be suspended for the clash after picking up his fifth booking of the season in midweek, while we are still no clearer when Robin van Persie will return to action.
The Dutchman hasn’t featured since scoring the winner against Arsenal almost a month ago and Moyes confirmed on Thursday that the striker has no fixed comeback date. Speaking at his pre-match press conference this afternoon, the Scot offered no update on RVP, only saying that some of his injured players have a chance of featuring, while others don’t.
Midfielder Shinji Kagawa was struck down by illness after the Everton game and is now considered a doubt to face Newcastle tomorrow. Moyes said:
“Shinji’s had a sickness and was unwell after the game. I’ll need to see how he is tomorrow. He wasn’t too good after the game.
“It happens at all football clubs – you get injuries, sickness and suspensions – not just at this one. We’ve got a few injuries, like every other club in the Premier League. They’re all making progress. Some have got a chance, some don’t.” [source: FIFA]
If van Persie is once again ruled out, it leaves Moyes with limited options in attack. Javier Hernandez is expected to start while Danny Welbeck is another option the manager could turn to.
Elsewhere, Michael Carrick remains sidelined with an Achilles problem but Phil Jones returns from a one-match suspension.
