Tottenham Hotspur entertain Manchester City at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night.
Spurs are desperate for three points to keep the pressure on fourth-placed Liverpool while City need a win to keep pace with leaders Arsenal, so it’s all to play for in north London.
Ahead of the game, Tim Sherwood has given TottenhamHotspur.com a team news update and confirmed that Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela are the only two players who are not be available.
Townsend has missed over a month will a hamstring strain while Lamela has also struggled to overcome a thigh problem and with the pair not training with the first team, Sherwood has revealed the duo are not in contention to face City.
There is better news on Younes Kaboul, Paulinho, Sandro and Jan Vertonghen with all four players working their way back to full fitness after lengthy lay-offs and they all featured in a friendly win over West Ham last week.
However, the Spurs boss has confirmed he’s being cautious with the quartet’s recovery and hinted he may not start them tomorrow after such long periods out the first team. He told the clubs website:
“The four lads are back in training but we have to be cautious of not rushing them back,” said Head Coach Tim. “We have to make sure they are ready.
“Andros and Erik are the only ones not training at the moment.
“The lads are getting fitter, stronger and very soon we’ll have a full squad to pick from.
“That (having the full squad) will be huge for us. It doesn’t get bigger than City and the temptation would be to put them back in, but if they are not ready, it could be counter-productive.”
Manchester City have been handed a boost with the news that Alvaro Negredo is expected to be recalled despite picking up a shoulder problem last week, with boss Manuel Pellegrini confirming the striker is available:
“Negredo is okay. He is in the squad list and has no problems.” Pellegrini told ESPN today
David Silva is also available after being rested last week as a precaution due to a minor hamstring strain, but Pellegrini also confirmed that James Milner and Javi Garcia join Samir Nasri on the sidelines.
