Chelsea Plot £20m Player-Plus-Cach Swap Deal To Land Diego Costa
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is plotting to use Fernando Torres as bait along with £20m to try and land Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa this summer.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, news of Chelsea’s interest in landing Diego Costa.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is planning to use Fernando Torres as bait along with £20m to try and land Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa this summer, according to the Metro.
Mourinho has already hinted he will look to bring in a top class striker at the end of the season and despite being linked with moves for the likes of Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, it seems the Portuguese coach has made Costa his No.1 target.
The Metro are citing reports coming out of Spain that claim Chelsea failed with a late bid to sign the 25-year-old in January but are now plotting a sensational player-plus-cash swap deal that would see them try and tempt Atletico with Torres plus £20m in cash in exchange for the Brazilian-born striker.
The newspaper suggests Chelsea will make the bid at the start of the summer before the World Cup kicks off with Costa believed to be valued at around £35million.
That would mean Mourinho is valuing Torres at £15m, which may seem a little generous considering he’s not only been out of form over the past three years at Stamford Bridge, but he’s also been plagued by a number of niggling injuries and is approaching his 30th birthday.
However, Torres is still idolised by the Atletico fans after his hugely successful time at the club between 1995-2007, and it would also offer them a ready-made replacement for Costa, so I’m sure the Spaniard’s would consider it if they could agree a deal that suited all parties.
Costa would be a superb addition for Chelsea and could turn out to be the missing piece in Mourinho’s jigsaw. The west Londoners have sorely missed a world class finisher this season with none of the clubs current strikers finding the net on a consistent basis.
Putting Costa – who’s scored 25 goals in 29 games this season – in front of the likes of Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Salah makes for a mouthwatering prospect for Chelsea fans and I’m sure they will be keeping their fingers crossed that Jose could pull this one off.
