Captain Steven Gerrard will once again be sidelined after suffering an ankle infection that ruled him out of the team’s 2-0 win over West Brom at the weekend.
Gerrard was spotted outside a hospital with crutches and also a bandaged ankle. The news is a big blow to the squad after their skipper had just returned to first-team action with a fantastic set-piece goal against rivals Manchester United two weeks ago.
Gerrard is expected to be out of action for another month following his recent injury, hence missing Liverpool’s clash against Swansea City in the Barclays Premier League and also England’s friendly fixtures at the Wembley stadium against World Cup winners Spain and Sweden.
The 31-year-old is yet to feature for the national side since their disappointing 2-0 friendly defeat to France almost a year ago. Liverpool confirmed the news of Gerrards injury on their website:
Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast.
The player will not be available for this weekend’s game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden. Steven will now continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the Club’s medical staff.
