Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was left in tears after former Blues boss Jose Mourinho announced he was leaving the club, according to team mate Paulo Ferreira.
Mourinho was a hugely popular figure amongst the players and fans at Stamford Bridge after leading Chelsea to their first league title in nearly 50 years. However, his relationship with owner Roman Abromovich broke down after a serious of disagreements over player recruitment and the so-called ‘special one’ left in 2007.
Portuguese defender Paulo Ferreira recalls the day Mourinho broke it to the players that he was leaving, revealing that the news left striker Didier Drogba in tears:
“It is always complicated when a manager leaves a club, but this case was much more so.
“Jose came into the dressing room, gathered us all together and told us he was leaving. Didier Drogba was one of the worst affected. He wept like a child.”
Drogba admits it was an emotional moment and one that left the players in a state of shock:
“There was lots of emotion. It seemed unreal, as though it was a movie.
“We used to see him every day, and we were unprepared for him leaving. It was a real shock.”
