Arsenal Confirm Schwarzer Enquiry
By Fab4.
Arsenal have confirmed they have made an enquiry for Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, but were swiftly told he wasn’t for sale. Schwarzer is still one of the best in the business despite being 37-years-old, and was instrumental in Fulham’s charge to the Europa League Final last term.
Rumours have been circulating since the end of last season that Arsene Wenger has finally had enough of the erratic performances of Almunia and Fabianski and wants to buy a new No.1, and it seems the Australian is his prime target. However, Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confirmed that their initial advances have been rebuffed by Fulham.
“We have made an enquiry for him and they are not prepared to sell him so we have gone away,” Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood told the Daily Star.
“We can only hope they will change their minds, but at the moment it doesn’t look like it.”
Other media sites are reporting that Arsenal’s opening bid was £3m, which given his age and the fact he only has a year left on his contract, it seems pretty fair to me. But you can understand why Fulham are so keen to hang onto Schwarzer but i feel a bid of £4m would be enough to persuade the Cottagers to sell. There were also reports last week that Schwarzer had told Roy Hodgson ‘in and emotional heart-to-heart’ meeting that he couldn’t turn down the Gunners if they came in for him. Makes a nice change when the shoe is on the other foot doesn’t it!? So i can see this deal happening, but not until after the Aussie’s are out of the World Cup.
Would you like Schwarzer at Arsenal?
