Atletico Madrid are poised to test Chelsea’s resolve with a £25m bid for Andre Schurrle after the Blues rejected their proposal of a swap deal involving Miranda, according to reports.

Despite Jose Mourinho insisting his transfer business is finished this summer, speculation has linked the Portuguese coach with a move for another defender and reports last month suggested that the West Londoners had tabled a £20m bid for Brazilian international Miranda.

The 29-year-old has been a rock at the back for Atletico Madrid over the past two years and played a key role in helping Diego Simeone’s men lift the La Liga title last season, and it seems his impressive form had caught the eye of Mourinho.

The Express claim that while Atletico rejected the £20m offer, the Spaniard’s are believed to have put forward a counter proposal to Chelsea that would involve a player swap deal with Andre Schurrle.

The Blues are keen to keep hold of the German international and Miranda has since declared his intention to stay at the Vicente Calderon, so any potential swap deal appears off the table.

However, the newspaper suggests that Atletico remain interested in luring Schurrle away from Stamford Bridge and will test Chelsea’s resolve with a £25m bid for the attacker this month.

It remains to be seen how such an offer would be received in West London but I would expect it to be swiftly rejected. Schurrle only moved to Chelsea 12 months ago and although he had a slow start to life in England, he improved during the second half of last season and ended up scoring 8 goals in 30 appearances for the club.

The 23-year-old is a versatile attacker who can play anywhere across the attacking midfield positions as well as up front, so he offers Mourinho plenty of options and I’m sure the Portuguese coach will be keen to hang on to such a valuable asset as he looks to wrestle the title away from Manchester City this season.
