Liverpool have been handed a major injury boost with star striker Daniel Sturridge insisting he’s ‘fit and ready to go’ ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Sturridge has endured another frustrating season at Anfield with a number of injury problems restricting the England international to just three appearances so far.
The 26-year-old suffered his latest injury – a knee problem – on the eve of Jurgen Klopp’s first game in charge against Tottenham Hotspur last month and he’s been forced to miss the last seven matches.
However, Sturridge returned to full training at Melwood earlier this week and it appears the striker has now put himself in contention for a place in the squad to face Manchester City on Saturday evening after saying he is now ‘fit and ready to go’.
Speaking at the launch of Liverpool’s Retail Signature collection last night, Sturridge is quoted as saying by Liverpoolfc.com.
“I’m fit and ready to go and it’s going to be a great time for me,”
“It’s been great under the new manager. I’ve been back training for the past couple of days and I was training when he first arrived.
“It’s an exciting time to be at the club and I’m enjoying working with him and the style of football. It’s important for us to understand what he wants us to do.”
Having Sturridge fit again is a major boost for Liverpool as they’ve sorely missed his fire-power up front but we’ll have to wait and see whether Klopp decides to include him in the squad for the trip to the Etihad this weekend.
The German coach is expected to be cautious not to rush the striker back too soon so I highly doubt we’ll see Sturridge start against City, but he may be included on the bench and given a run-out in the second half.
Liverpool head into the game this weekend sitting tenth in the Premier League table after losing 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace before the international break so Klopp will be desperate to come away with a positive result at the league leaders on Saturday.
