Man Utd Eye £60m Double Swoop On Tottenham But Face Competition From Guardiola
Manchester United are plotting a £60m swoop on Tottenham for two of their key men but they’ll face stiff competition from Manchester City.
Managers are now making moves to try and strengthen their squads during the January transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with a double swoop on Tottenham…
Manchester United are plotting a £60m double swoop on Tottenham for Kyle Walker and Danny Rose but face competition from rivals Manchester City, according to a report in the Express.
Walker and Rose have been in excellent form for both club and country over the past 18 months having established themselves as key parts of Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven.
The pair are predominantly regarded as traditional full-backs but they are just as comfortable playing as wing-backs and have been outstanding since Pochettino switched to a 3-4-3 formation which has seen them climb to third in the Premier League table.
However, that form hasn’t gone unnoticed as the Express are citing a report from the Sun that claims Manchester United are eyeing a £60m double swoop for the north London duo.
Jose Mourinho is understood to be keen to strengthen his defensive options and is urging the United board to open their chequebook to land both Walker and Rose should Spurs agree to cash in.
Antonio Valencia has been excellent for United at right-back this season but the Ecuadorian international turns 32 this year so Walker would be the ideal long-term replacement if the Red Devils could lure him to Old Trafford.
Left-back has become something of a problem area for United as Luke Shaw is struggling to establish himself under Mourinho due to problems with his fitness and form and Rose would certainly be an improvement on Daley Blind or Matteo Darmian – who’ve both filled in at left-back this season.
However, United will face stiff competition for the duo as the Express claim that Manchester City are also keen and will go head-to-head with their rivals over their signatures.
Pep Guardiola is in desperate need of two new full-backs as Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Alexandar Kolarov are all the wrong side of 30 and coming towards the end of their careers.
Walker and Rose would be the ideal signings for City as their versatility will appeal to tactician Guardiola – who regularly switches between various formations – and at 26, they are both coming in to their prime years.

However, the duo only signed new long-term contracts with Tottenham last summer and I’m sure the north Londoners will be desperate to keep hold of them as Pochettino looks to build a title-winning side.
Chairman Daniel Levy is a tough negotiator so even if the club did decide to sell I think they’d demand more than £30m each for Walker and Rose, while the Spurs supremo would surely prefer to sell abroad rather than to a domestic rival such as City or United.
