Manchester United will be looking to avoid an upset by booking their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup when Derby County head to Old Trafford on Tuesday night. Here is the line-up I think Jose Mourinho will go with:
Goalkeeper: David De Gea has been outstanding for United once again this season so he’s due a well-earned rest in the League Cup with Sergio Romero expected to get the nod ahead of Lee Grant.
Defence: Mourinho is set to make wholesale changes to his defence as he rests the likes of Antonio Valencia, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw – who’ve become his settled back four in recent weeks.
Diogo Dalot impressed on his debut in the Champions League last week and he’s expected to get a recall at right-back with Ashley Young also ready to come in on the left side of the defence.
Eric Bailly has fallen out-of-favour under Mourinho but he should get a chance to impress tomorrow night with Phil Jones expected to make his first appearance since recovering from a hamstring injury.
Midfield: We should see plenty of changes in midfield too with Marouane Fellaini and Fred set to drop out while Paul Pogba should also be rested following his controversial comments about Man Utd’s style of play that were aimed at Mourinho yesterday.
Nemanja Matic missed the draw with Wolves on Sunday afternoon through suspension but he should be saved for the Premier League game with West Ham at the weekend so we could see Scott McTomany making a rare appearance.
Andreas Pereira could also come back in to the side after impressing earlier in the season while Ander Herrera is fit to make his return after missing the past few weeks through injury.
Attack: I expect Romelu Lukaku will be given a rest up front as Mourinho’s heavily reliant on the Belgian international. With Marcus Rashford serving the final game of his three-match ban we could see Anthony Martial deployed through the middle.
Alexis Sanchez has been in poor form this season so the Chilean international may be taken out of the spotlight with Juan Mata getting a recall while Jesse Lingard could be the only player to retain his place from the Wolves draw.
Here is how we think United will line-up:
