Man Utd team news update: Solskjaer confirms up to 10 players will miss Palace trip
Manchester United are set to be without up to 10 players for their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
Manchester United are set to be without up to 10 players for their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he confirmed the bad news after providing a full team news and injury update ahead of the game.
The United coach revealed that Anthony Martial has been ruled out of the trip to London tomorrow night as the club aren’t willing to risk the attacker after he sat out the 0-0 draw with Liverpool due to a groin injury.
The stalemate on Sunday proved costly for Man Utd as Ander Herrera limped off early on with a hamstring injury while Juan Mata soon followed his compatriot off the field with his own hamstring complaint and the Spanish duo are facing a spell on the sidelines.
Jesse Lingard was rushed back for the visit of Liverpool at the weekend and he aggravated his hamstring issue just 15 minutes after coming off the bench and the midfielder is also certain to miss tomorrow’s clash with Palace.
Marcus Rashford suffered an ankle injury in the first half against Liverpool but was forced to limp through the majority of the game as United had already used all three of their substitutions. The striker is still being assessed but he’s considered a major doubt for the trip to Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
Nemanja Matic missed the visit of Liverpool with a muscle injury that he sustained in training last week and the Serbian international has been ruled out for a few weeks while Antonio Valencia is still working his way back to full fitness following a calf problem.
Phil Jones has missed the last two matches due to illness and remains a doubt to face Palace while Solskjaer also confirmed that Matteo Darmian is unlikely to be ready to return having only recently returned to training.
Young striker Mason Greenwood is also still on the sidelines so it means Man Utd are set to be without 10 players for the trip to London tomorrow but there is some positive news for Solskjaer as Marcos Rojo is set to return to the squad.
Solskjaer told the Manchester Evening News:
“We’ve not had a session yet, so I don’t think there are a lot of positives, no. I don’t know the list [of players] that’s supposed to be injured, Matteo [Darmian] trained the other day, I don’t think he’ll be ready, [Marcos] Rojo will be involved, Rashy we’re still waiting to see how his ankle is responding to the treatment, muscle injuries are too early to think about. That’s it.
“Phil was ill one of the days last week, so he’s been out for a little while as well with an illness. Luckily at centre back there are quite a few fit ones, Victor, Chris and Eric, the three of them are ready.
“Martial is not going to be ready for this one, either, we can’t risk it. So maybe [he will be ready for] Southampton, but we’re not going risk anther one. In hindsight, Jesse was eager, he ticked all the boxes in training, with his recovery work and rehab, but maybe a couple of days too early. It was Liverpool and he was desperate to be part of it.”
With Valencia, Darmian, Jones, Matic, Herrera, Mata, Lingard, Rashford, Martial, Greenwood all set to miss the Palace game, Solskjaer has drafted teenage trio James Garner, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes in to the squad.
The injury crisis has come at a nightmare time for Man Utd as they face a pivotal few weeks that will see them take on the likes of Palace, PSG, Arsenal and Wolves across three different competitions that will go a long way to determining the success of their season.
