Several Players Forced To Stay Behind As United Leave For France
United flew out to Marseille this morning for their Champions League last 16 clash with the French Champions. There were a few notable absentees as some of United’s senior stars have been forced to stay at home.
Giggs has joined a growing list of absentees and more details are expected on his omission in Sir Alex’s press conference this afternoon. Rio Ferdinand is still unavailable after injuring his calf during United’s Premiership defeat at Molineux on February 5th. Jonny Evans also misses out with an ankle problem meaning Chris Smalling will again partner Nemanja Vidic in defence. Smalling impressed in the Manchester Derby and his involvement in Marseille will give him the opportunity to get some more big game experience.
Michael Owen and Anderson have also picked up knocks. Owen is suffering from a groin strain which is not believed to be too serious while Ando picked up a knee injury on Saturday against Crawley Town. Anderson could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with some reporting he will be out for the next two months. An unfortunate blip for the Brazilian as he was starting to put in some impressive performances.
However Sir Alex Ferguson was able to include the Da Silva twins Rafael and Fabio, despite the pair both coming off with knocks during Saturdays FA Cup tie. Young pair Joshua King and Ryan Tunnicliffe were also selected to travel to France having being registered with Premier League number on Friday and making the match day squad on Saturday.
