Spurs Ready To Bid For Madrid Star
By Football Talk.
Tottenham are lining up a £20m bid for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan, according to the Daily Star. Manager Harry Redknapp is looking to revamp his strike force ahead of next season and the ex-Manchester United man is his main target.
Redknapp is keen to bring in a striker with Champions League experience as Spurs join Europe’s elite next season, and 31-year-old Forlan has played in Europe’s premier competition for both Manchester United and his current club Atletico Madrid. He netted the winner in the Europa League Final against Fulham as well as the goal which knocked Liverpool out.
The report claims Redknapp is prepared to sell off both Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko to raise the funds needed to buy Forlan. Atletico’s failure to qualify for next seasons Champions League means they will have to off-load some players and after deciding to hang on to Argentinean international Sergio Aguero, Forlan is the most likely high-profile casualty.
Despite being 31-years-old, Forlan will still command a high price due to his experience and goal-scoring record. Madrid slapped a £30m price-tag on his head but Tottenham refused to go that high and feel a bid nearer £20m should get their man. Forlan has attracted interest from Marseille, but they were put off by his £60,000pw wages. His agent Daniel Bolotnicoff confirmed that, not for the first time, there was interest from the premier league his in client.
“Forlan is a player who a lot of people are interested about in the European market.
“Each of the seasons many clubs show interest in him.
“This is not the first time that a Premier League club have wanted to try to buy him back.
“At the moment, though, he is concentrating on the World Cup finals.’’
