Manchester United welcome Real Madrid to Old Trafford on Tuesday night for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie and we have the latest team and injury news ahead of the game.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been putting his squad through their paces at training on Monday morning and according to the Mirror Phil Jones was the major absentee. The defender has been a doubt for the game after picking up an ankle knock two weeks ago and while Ferguson is willing to give the player until the last minute to prove his fitness, Jones missed training today making him a major doubt for tomorrow’s game. Fellow defender Jonny Evans also remains a doubt after training alone and didn’t take part in the full session.
There is better news regarding Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Danny Welbeck who all took part in training. Ferdinand missed Saturday’s 4-0 win over Norwich with flu but is now fully fit and in contention to face Madrid. Evra and Welbeck both picked up knocks against the Canaries but took part in the full session at Carrington.
Striker Robin van Persie is also available despite being withdrawn early on Saturday. There were rumours that the attacker had picked up an injury but Ferguson told ManUtd.com that it was a pre-planned move and there was no injury worry for the Dutchman:
“We agreed Robin would get an hour,” Ferguson told ManUtd.com
